Reserve Care History

For more than 50 years, Reserve Care has been guiding individuals and families through advanced illness, caregiving and end-of-life care.

A Legacy of Compassionate Hospice and Palliative Care

For decades, we have walked alongside patients and families with expertise and heart — formerly as Hospice of the Western Reserve and now as Reserve Care.

1970-1979

1978 

Cancer Family Service is founded in Lake County, Ohio.

1980-1989

1981 

The organization becomes Hospice of Lake County Inc. and opens an office in Mentor, Ohio

1990-1999

1990

Hospice of the Western Reserve merges with the Hospice Network of Northern Ohio. 


1991

Hospice of the Western Reserve becomes one of the first hospices in Ohio to receive licensure from the Ohio Department of Health.


1992

The Pediatric team forms to address the specialized needs of seriously ill children and their families.


1993

The organization opens a new facility in Westlake to serve western Cuyahoga County. The alternative home care team forms to support patients living in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. 


1994

A new facility opens in Solon to serve patients and families in the surrounding communities.


1995

Hospice House, the first residential hospice facility in Greater Cleveland, opens.


1999

The organization launches the Bereavement Center, a community program providing grief support, counseling and education.

2000-2009

2001

Hospice of the Western Reserve opens a site in Lorain County.


2003

A Cleveland facility opens to house The Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Bereavement Center. 

The organization expands services in Ashtabula County and opens its eighth satellite office.


2004

Hospice of the Western Reserve launches a specialized dementia care program in response to the growing prevalence of the disease.


2007

The organization introduces the Peaceful & Proud initiative, training staff to support veterans and address issues including PTSD, remorse, regret and substance use that may shape end-of-life care preferences.


2008

Hospice of the Western Reserve establishes the End of Life Library, a specialized virtual resource for professionals locally and across the country.

2010-2019

2010

Hospice of the Western Reserve opens an office in Summit County and expands support services through the Navigator program, which provides emotional support and caregiver guidance for patients transitioning off hospice services.


2012

The Ames Family Hospice House opens in Westlake, offering a state-of-the-art 32-bed inpatient hospice facility


2015

Hospice of the Western Reserve completes a merger with HMC Hospice of Medina County. 

The organization pilots new in-home support services.


2017

West Campus opens in Fairview Park.


2018

East Campus opens in Willoughby.


2019-Present

2020

Hospice of the Western Reserve becomes the first hospice organization in Northeast Ohio to achieve Level 5 partner status with We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs.


2021

The organization completes a merger with Stein Hospice.


2024

Hospice of the Western Reserve acquires Hospice of North Central Ohio, expanding services to Ashland, Knox and Richland counties.

Tiffin office opens.


2026

Hospice of the Western Reserve begins operating under the name Reserve Care, reflecting the organization’s full range of services and its commitment to supporting individuals and families across Ohio through caregiving, serious illness and end-of-life care

Reserve Care Hospice Center Cleveland, a state-of-the-art 32-bed inpatient facility on Cleveland’s lakeshore, opens.
